Ep.2 - Max and Chris Talk About "Finding Inspiration"
Max Fish (the author of the Air Suspension Design Book) and "Pinstripe" Chris Dunlop (the primary artist for the Air Suspension Design Book) discuss the struggles of trying to find inspiration when there is none.
Max has been owner/operator of a high-end fabrication shop called Bio Kustumz since 1997, where they specialize in designing and building custom, one-off suspensions.
Chris is a self-taught automotive artist who specializes in both design/rendering (as shown in the video) and more "traditional" art that might be considered loose and interpretive vs. tight and detailed.

How to File-Finish a Weld

While a beautiful weld is... well... beautiful, some projects don't lend themselves to the look of exposed welds. This is a quick tutorial of how to get your welded seams to look like they were never a welded seam.
Deconstructing the Machine - Ep. 1
Переглядів 16 тис.4 роки тому
Lowlife Mike's Tacoma has always been one to make people scratch their heads, so I figured it would be an excellent place to start this series. With a bell-crank lower link/bag mount and a fill-floating shock mount, there's a lot to be curious about here. Follow along as we deconstruct this suspension. It's obvious I need some better recording equipment, but hopefully, you all enjoy this enough...
Can I Put A Bend In My Link Bar??
Переглядів 20 тис.4 роки тому
This is a very common question with a very simple answer... kind of. While a link really doesn't know what it is shaped like, it will act like a straight line drawn between its two points. The discussion gets tricky when you start talking about engineering and strength. And in some cases, using a spherical joint can add another concern. For this video, we are simply going to talk about the geom...
Why Shocks Matter
Переглядів 6 тис.5 років тому
'Over The Waves' is a video that was produced by the Chevrolet Motor Company in 1938 to demonstrate the effectiveness of shock absorbers. And while the video is old and not very technical, the video still does a great job of showing how much of a difference even an old "knee-action" shock can make on the ride quality of a vehicle. Despite popular belief, all airbagged vehicles should be running...
How To Set Up A Panhard Bar
Переглядів 442 тис.6 років тому
The panhard bar is such a wonderfully simple design that gets a bad rap from a long history of poor implementation. Having too much lateral axle movement can be particularly troublesome on an air suspension equipped vehicle, because of this, it's easy to see who so many people prefer to avoid using a panhard bar. The reality is that a properly designed panhard bar system can keep lateral axle m...
Why Does a 2-Link Rear Suspension Limit Articulation?
Переглядів 100 тис.6 років тому
First off, we should take a moment to clarify that a GM style, truck trailing arm (the rear suspension used in NASCAR) is not the same design as the 2-link that is commonly used in the air suspension industry. The 2-link that we are discussing in this video is the design where the front points are typically bolted into the factory leaf spring mounts. It should also be noted that ladder bars are...
Pinion Angle Problems?
Переглядів 203 тис.6 років тому
Pinion angle change is an important factor to take into consideration when designing your own suspension. Just because the pinion is set perfectly at ride-height doesn't mean it is going to stay that way throughout the travel. Poor suspension geometry can cause many different problems, and things will only become more complicated when air bag suspension is added to the mix. Knowing how to desig...
Half Travel vs. Ride Height
Переглядів 30 тис.7 років тому
There is a lot of debate about whether you should set your air bagged suspension up at ride height or half travel. To help make some sense out of things, we put together a video that shows the reason why we prefer the half-travel method. For more information about proper setup, watch our Instant Center video - ua-cam.com/video/Vg4NlSogVcI/v-deo.html Artwork - Pinstripe Chris ua-cam.com/users/cr...
Basic Instant Center Concept
Переглядів 92 тис.7 років тому
Suspension geometry is important to a quality driving vehicle, and instant center is the foundation of any link-type suspension. A full explanation as to why the instant center is important is a bit long, but the short version is this: The instant center dictates how the energy from the axle is transferred into the chassis. If the instant center is off, anything from diminished traction to seve...
Alternative Steering Concept
Переглядів 14 тис.7 років тому
The Toyota Tundra pickup is not a very common truck to bag and lay frame. This is because the front suspension is setup in such a way to cause some pretty significant space issues. When Bio Kustumz designed a completely new suspension for this particular vehicle, the steering gear ended up being the biggest hurdle. The flex that you see in the rack is common and is caused by the mounts being ru...
Link Bar Geometry
Переглядів 31 тис.7 років тому
Calculating the geometry of a single link bar is fairly straight forward, assuming that you know what the parts are called and how to use them. The sagitta (pronounced suh-jit-uh) is the amount of push/pull that the bar has as it cycles through its travel. Watts-Link Geometry
Переглядів 515 тис.7 років тому
The watts-link is a commonly used lateral locating device on rear link-type suspensions. The advantage to the design is that it can keep the axle centered throughout the entire travel range of the suspension. Understanding the subtleties of this design, which are necessary for the system to work correctly, are actually quite simple. Air Suspension Design Book order link - www.airsuspensionbook....

What happens on the parallel 4 link that doesn’t give an instant centre?

So, this then begs the question, what is the correct way to set up when you have a 4x4 font axle and the frame link are 4-6 inches or more (maybe 10) above the axle link?

Love your site and videos. I'm ordering the book. You guys so much enlighting information. My latest project is a lifted 100 series Land Cruiser/LX. The information provided let me set Panhard bar correction to the original roll center angle. I didn't have a clue about this before I started the lift. The videos came along at the right time. For a big Cruiser that has been built and lifted for off-road use, applying techniques that I learned from these videos, let the truck handle like a sports truck on curvy paved switchbacks and perform extremely well on off-road whoops. Also, with the Panhard correction, I can hit railroad crossings at regular road speed without the read shifting around and giving that "heebie geebie" feeling. The off-road community can learn a lot from this site and these videos. I have three other cars with Scott-Russell rear link suspensions. If you would ever like some pictures of Scott-Russell / Torsion rear suspension just let me know.

Rarely the axle moves up and down evenly on both ends, the wheels move independently, one up and one down, so axle is fine if panhard is located evenly on level ground. 4runner never goes below axle on both ends. Cool vid.
